Electric heater setup
From Fab @ Home
A heated syringe may be used to deposit a variety of materials that are liquid only at elevated temperature. The standard syringes and nozzles of the Model 1 can sustain temperatures of at least 250°F (121°C).
- chocolate
- Field's Metal or other similar low melting point alloys.
- hot glue or other plastics?
A heated syringe can be constructed by wrapping a heating element around the syringe or around a thermally conductive sheath for the syringe. Optionally, a thermocouple and temperature controller can be used for temperature feedback.
It is important to consider heating of the nozzle during construction of a heated syringe. For some materials, freezing in the tip may occur and cause clogging.
Examples
An example of a simple heater can be seen on the chocolate fabbing page.
CAD drawing of an aluminum sheath that includes adjustable inserts for heating the nozzle will be posted.
