Printer building question

Hello

I am new to 'build your own' 3d printers but we do own a store bought one.

I want my students to salvage parts from printers/scanners etc to build a 3d printer. I notice that the step motors and some other electronics are recommended.

Is it possible to build this style or a modified 3d printer using different parts ie a step motor from a inkjet printer?
